Consultancy

We work closely with academic staff on a great many e-learning projects, and we’re always happy to talk through your ideas with you. If you have an idea which involves e-learning, just email us on elearning@qmul.ac.uk and one of our Learning Technologists will get back to you within 2 working days.

Sessions we run

We run a programme of workshops, exchange of practice and seminar-style events about e-learning, training in the use of the College’s Virtual Learning Environment and other learning technologies. For details of these, visit our online course booking system where you can search by type under ‘Learning and Teaching: E-Learning’.

Bespoke Support for E-Learning in the Disciplines

Departments/Schools/Institutes have or are now starting to develop their own plans for ensuring a consistent e-learning experience for their students. Recognising that these will differ with the discipline, we are available to help you to devise a sensible strategy, to run developmental and training sessions for you and to agree how best we can continue to support your activities.

We’ll advise you on how to develop an e-learning plan which is publishable to your students, offer you up to three developmental events for your staff or students a year, and draw up a service description for how we can support your expansion in the use of e-learning. If you’re a Head of Department or have responsibility for e-learning in your discipline, and wish to take advantage of this package, contact Sam Brenton, head of E-Learning on s.brenton@qmul.ac.uk.

Distance Learning

If you’re thinking of starting a distance learning course, or adding a by-distance option to a campus-taught course, we can help, from the initial documentation, to putting you in touch with the right services across QM, to designing the learning activities and passing on sound ideas about how to ensure that distance learning students get an experience as valuable and engaging as those based here. Contact s.brenton@qmul.ac.uk.

E-learning Studio

We have an E-Learning Studio on the Mile End Campus which offers a comfortable and well resourced area for staff and postgraduate students to come in and work on e-learning projects.

Email list – elearning-news@qmul.ac.uk

We run an occasional email list for people interested in receiving updates about forthcoming e-learning events and initiatives at QM. You can subscribe to it from http://www.lists.qmul.ac.uk/sympa/info/elearning-news.

Support for the Virtual Learning Environment

We are responsible for the College’s Virtual Learning Environment, Blackboard (Campus Edition 8). This is used by almost all departments, has over 850 active online course areas and is a central part of academic life at QM for over half of our students. We support staff and students in practical and eductionally effective uses of the VLE (everything from how to upload a file, to techniques for teaching online). Read more about the VLE, Log In, or visit the support site.

Other online and classroom-based learning technologies

We support and offer a range of other learning technologies and applications, free for you to use at QM.

Schemes, funding

From early 2010, we are launching a number of initiatives to help make it easier for you to develop worthwhile e-learning content and activities. More details will appear here for December 2009.
